Handy Tips in Keeping your Sod Alive
Sod is very important because of the several benefits that it comes with. It is essential to know that no matter how nice your sod looks when you first get it, proper care needs to be taken to ensure that the sod does not deteriorate. On initial install, sod is a lush green but there is a lot of fragility to it at first, as the sod needs to be rooted before you can start to worry less about it.
Applying the proper amount of water is very important, especially WHEN you water it, this is one of the major causes of lawn death and fungus. When your sod has just been freshly installed, you need to water the sod properly to ensure that they are kept moist at all times in the beginning. This is to allow for the roots of the sod to grow and extend into the soil.
You should water your lawn 2 times per day for about 30 minutes. Sometimes on extremely hot days, you may need to water it up to 3 times per day. The recommended times for watering are 6:00AM and 2:00PM. After 2 weeks, cut the watering back down to 2-3 times per week depending on the temperature and time of year. Too much watering can cause fungus.
It is important to have minimal walking on the sod to minimize stress for the first 2 weeks. DO NOT MOW THE GRASS for the first 2 weeks minimum as this will cause it to die. When you do decide to mow the grass, make sure its on the HIGHEST setting at least for the first month while its getting settled.
Beware of lawn bugs, because they can wreak havoc on sod. We highly advise as soon as you get your sod installed, to call an expert lawn care company to make sure its sprayed and fertilized every other month to prevent bugs and disease.
There is a high vulnerability of new sod to fungus, and of course other diseases attacking the grass. If at any point you notice discoloration, we advise again to call a lawn maintenance company, because they know how to test for different issues and how to tread them. We advise that you do not try to treat your own lawn as it can be dangerous to your health if proper safety measures are not taken.
